Incident Contacts

On August 8, 2024, the Canyon Fire started near Buchanan Road about a mile from Tuolumne City, California. The fire is within steep and rocky terrain in the North Fork of the Tuolumne River Canyon. Fire crews attacked the fire aggressively and utilized defensive burning to keep the fire from burning nearby homes. In the morning, air support helped keep the fire in check and after some initial growth, it has remained at about 85 acres for the past 36 hours. 

The Canyon Fire is under unified command. CAL FIRE, the Stanislaus National Forest, and the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office have been fully engaged and coordinated to ensure firefighter and public safety.  

The primary objective is to protect life and property.

Significant Events

All Evacuation Orders and Warnings were lifted by the Sheriff's Office as of 1800 on August 10, 2024.

 

Buchanan Road remains closed at Canyon Road.

Planned Actions

Patrolling handlines. 

Mopping up, working toward a 200-foot buffer of black adjacent to the containment lines.

Suppression rehab of dozer lines.

Remarks

Original Evacuation orders were downgraded to Evacuation Warnings on 8/10/2024 at 0900.  All Evacuation Warnings were lifted on 8/10/2024 at 1800.
