River Complex Fire Update Saturday, October 2, 2021

Etna, CA- The weather will continue to trend warm and dry over the next two operational periods. These conditions have caused the fuel to dry since the last precipitation event that occurred on September 27th. Historically the fire area has received 0.4" of rain during the month of September. This September, it has received over 1.0" which has assisted firefighters in their containment efforts.  Fire activity increased yesterday in the afternoon on the flank south of Minnehaha Creek. This portion of the fire is extremely steep and the crews have been dealing with hot material rolling across their lines and increasing fire intensity. Crews are mitigating this by digging "cup trenches" on the portions of line which are "underslung" (meaning on a slope underneath the fire's perimeter). Although this increases the labor involved in constructing the handline, it is an important tactic in order to keep the fire in its current location.

Crews continue to rely on the support of helicopters to deliver water to the fire's hot spots where the steepness of the terrain make it impossible to reach with hose lays. Helicopters are supporting the crews sleeping near the line north of Stoddard Lake to continue containment on the perimeter west of the Tangle Blue spot fire.  Forecasted clear skies will allow for another full day of air support.

Forest Closure Orders:  Shasta Trinity National Forest Order No. 14-21-36 is effective September 29, 2021 through November 15, 2021.  Klamath National Forest Order No. 21-05-22 is effective 09/10/2021 through 10/20/2021.
