River Complex Fire update 08.15.2021
River Complex 2021
Publication Type: News -
Moderate fire growth occurred on the south flank of the Haypress Fire with most of the fire spread occurring in Big Bend Creek up to Adams Peak on the Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forest border. Infrared data shows the fire is backing downslope to the southwest near Summerville from a firing operation, and additional growth to the northeast into the west Coffee Creek Road area near the 09W05 trail. The west Coffee Creek Road area is a very dense continuous mixed conifer forest with no previously recorded fire history. The Summer fire had limited growth to the north west, while the Cronan showed some backing fire to the south west.
Yesterday: A new fire was added to the complex yesterday. The Pierce Fire currently has 15 smoke jumpers taking suppression action. The fire is less than 2 acres currently.
Today:
- Contain fire to the south side of the Cecilville/Callahan Road on the north side of the Haypress
- Continue mop up and patrol of existing control lines, monitor for spot fires and slop-overs on all River Complex fires
- Conduct firing operations where feasible to strengthen containment lines and remove available fuels for the fire to consume
- Continue direct and indirect line construction and firing operations on the north side of the Summer and the south side of the Haypress to keep the fire from progressing towards communities
- All fires within the River Complex are being managed under a full suppression tactics plan
Fire Behavior: Observed fire behavior included group tree torching and moderate duration crown fire runs in extremely dry fuels and vegetation in steep terrain. Crews on the ground reported moderate fire activity overnight Saturday into Sunday morning.
Weather: Hot, dry, and continued unstable conditions persist Sunday, resulting in a near-critical fire weather environment. The most critical weather concern of the day will be smoke and its impact on heating and drying. It is expected that many areas will remain blanketed in smoke, with little relief expected today. These areas are expected to stay cooler and more humid under the influence of the smoke. Some thinning of the of the upper drift smoke is expected in the late afternoon. The thinning of smoke, coupled with increased ventilation could result in an uptick in winds along with warming and drying this afternoon. Expect stronger winds on the ridgetops ahead of a weak weather system.
