Cooks Peak Fire Update

Update 5/08/2022

Acres: 59,359 acres   Containment: 97% Cause: Human, under investigation Start Date: Sunday, April 17, 2022 Fuels: ponderosa pine, oak brush and grass

Location: North of Ocate NM, approximately 46 miles north of Las Vegas, NM

Fire Update:  Throughout the fire, smoke may be visible as fuels continue to be consumed. Crews are mopping up the perimeter and working the unsecured fireline along the northwest edge.  Crews will also work in the southeast corner where several pockets of fuels are actively burning.  Within the northern interior, fire-scorched pine needles have fallen and are being consumed by the fire, creating additional smoke in that area.  A Red Flag Warning is forecasted again today through tomorrow due to dry weather and winds. Forecasts call for sustained 30-40 mph winds with gusts up to 60 mph.

The incident resources will continue to support local resources in any new starts in the vicinity of the fire. Suppression repair is underway where needed and specialists are assessing the fire for additional rehabilitation actions.

Road Access Update: State Road 21 between Cimarron and 5 miles west of Miami remains closed except to local traffic.  Visit https://nmroads.com/mapIndex.html for additional information.
