Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fires Daily Update

June 30, 2022

Acres: 341,735| Containment: 93% | Total personnel: 1,187|
Start Date: Hermits Peak: April 6, 2022; Calf Canyon: April 19, 2022 | Cause: Hermits Peak: Spot fires from prescribed burn; Calf Canyon: Holdover fire from prescribed pile burn | Location: Located near Gallinas Canyon | Fuels: Heavy mixed conifer, ponderosa pine, brush, and grass Highlights: Fire resources are being released due to the decrease in fire activity. The Camino Real Ranger District on the Carson National Forest and Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District on the Santa Fe National Forest remain closed as firefighters continue to work on suppression repair across the entire fire area. The next virtual Community Meeting on Tuesday, July 5, at 6 p.m. will be livestreamed on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/CalfCanyonHermitsPeak North Zone (SWIMT3): Firefighters continue with suppression repair operations, such as chipping, fixing fences and repairing roads to reduce erosion in Mora, Holman, Guadalupita, Chacon, along the NM Highway 518 and 434 corridors, and in other areas. A fire crew comprised of veterans are part of the repair group taskforce assisting with chipping operations. As drying conditions continue, firefighters will remove equipment no longer needed. Firefighters will continue to assist with any new fire starts in the temporary flight restriction area of the fire.    South Zone (GBIMT7): With the warmer and drier weather, resources can access more areas of the fire for suppression repair work. Resources are continuing handline repair in the Geronimo area and will move into the higher elevations as weather conditions allow. In the Willow Creek vicinity, a helicopter was used to remove hose which is no longer needed for fire suppression efforts. On the southern end of the fire, heavy equipment was used to repair dozer line. Resources continue to scout areas across the fire and will begin repair work when the area is safe to access.  Evacuations: For updated evacuation information from the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fires: www.tinyurl.com/hermitspeak. The Ready, Set, Go evacuation guide is available in English and Spanish here: https://tinyurl.com/RSGNM. For disaster assistance resources, visit: https://www.nmdhsem.org/2022-wildfires/.   Weather: Monsoonal moisture will begin to work its way back into northern New Mexico starting today. This will result in increasing potential for showers and thunderstorms which will continue off and on into early next week. Overall, the threat for widespread flooding and debris flows is low but it becomes more likely in the event a strong storm moves over high-severity burn scar areas.   Closures and Restrictions: The Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fires closure orders covering the Pecos/Las Vegas District of the Santa Fe National Forest and Camino Real Ranger District of the Carson National Forest remain in place.
