In the photo below, BAER Soil Scientist Christopher (Kit) Macdonald (George Washington & Jefferson National Forests Physical Resources and Planning Staff Officer) and BAER Wildlife Biologist, Matthew Oneill (Coconino National Forest Fish Biologist) assess soil conditions and document watershed data to create a soil burn severity (SBS) map for the northern half (Phase 2) of the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon burned areas:
Phase 1 and Phase 2 Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Post-Fire BAER SBS maps are posted on InciWeb under the maps tab at:
Hermits Peak & Calf Canyon BAER Maps - InciWeb the Incident Information System (nwcg.gov).
The BAER team’s data and analysis is shared with cooperating agencies and partners that assist private landowners and residents who may be affected by post-fire rain events.
For more information and to better understand soil burn severity, go to a BAER information article at:
BAER soil scientists and hydrologists assess BAER critical values by evaluating the overall burned landscape areas for data gathering and modeling purposes. Their assessments will be incorporated into each of their specialist reports with their analysis and findings documented in the final BAER assessment report that is shared with its interagency cooperators, partners, and the public:
