Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fires, Daily Update June 28, 2022

Hermits Peak Fire
Publication Type: News -

Acres: 341,735| Containment: 93% | Total personnel: 1,215|
Start Date: Hermits Peak: April 6, 2022; Calf Canyon: April 19, 2022 | Cause: Hermits Peak: Spot fires from prescribed burn; Calf Canyon: Holdover fire from prescribed pile burn | Location: Located near Gallinas Canyon | Fuels: Heavy mixed conifer, ponderosa pine, brush, and grass

Highlights: Fire personnel numbers will continue to decrease daily because resources are being released due to the decrease in fire activity. The Camino Real Ranger District on the Carson National Forest and Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District on the Santa Fe National Forest remain closed as firefighters continue to work on suppression repair across the entire fire area. A recording of last night’s Community Meeting is available at: www.facebook.com/CalfCanyonHermitsPeak.

North Zone (SWIMT3): The entire northern zone of the fire has received an inch or more of rainfall from the recent storms. The uncontained western side of the fire has not had any movement for several days thanks to the moisture. Firefighters continue fire suppression repair work in Mora, Holman, Guadalupita, Chacon, along the NM Highway 518 and 434 corridors, and in other areas as well. A rapid response crew continues to make sandbags and can assist with post-flood support by removing debris from waterways. Saturated roadways are preventing firefighters from accessing areas of the fire, impacting some repair work, and have delayed the removal of heavy equipment from within the contained fire areas. Firefighters will continue to assist with any new fire starts in the temporary flight restriction area of the fire.

South Zone (GBIMT7): The Great Basin Type 2 Incident Management Team 7 took command of the southern zone of the fire at 7:00 a.m. this morning. Resources are still unable to access higher elevation areas due to recent rains and soil conditions. Going forward, crews will be focusing on the lower elevation repair efforts, including fixing fences and culverts that were damaged and dozer line that was built during the suppression of the fire on public and private lands.
