Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fires Daily Update, June 29, 2022

Hermits Peak Fire
Publication Type: News -

Acres: 341,735; Containment: 93%; Total Personnel: 1,237; Start Date: Hermits Peak: April 6, 2022 and Calf Canyon: April 19, 2022; Cause: Hermits Peak: Spot fires from prescribed burn and Calf Canyon: Holdover fire from prescribed burn; Location: Located near Gallinas Canyon; Fuels: Heavy mixed conifer, ponderosa pine, brush, and grass

Highlights: Fire resources are being released due to the decrease in fire activity. The Camino Real Ranger District on the Carson National Forest and Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District on the Santa Fe National Forest remain closed as firefighters continue to work on suppression repair across the entire fire area.

North Zone (SWIMT3): An inch or more of rain was received over the fire area yesterday. Firefighters are working on suppression repair activities such as fixing fences and repairing roads in Mora, Holman, Guadalupita, Chacon, along the NM Highway 518 and 434 corridors, and in other areas as well. As drying conditions continue, firefighters will remove equipment that was put in place for suppression use and will move heavy equipment to other areas for use. Firefighters are prepared to assist with post-flood support by removing debris from areas within the fire perimeter and will continue to assist with any new fire starts in the temporary flight restriction area of the fire.

South Zone (GBIMT7): Resources were able to access portions of the west side of the fire yesterday to begin repair efforts. Higher elevation areas remain inaccessible due to recent rains and soil conditions. Resources will continue to scout areas and begin repair work when the area is safe to access. Crews will continue to focus on lower elevation repair efforts, including fixing fences and culverts that were damaged and dozer line that was built during the suppression of the fire on public and private lands.

The Ready, Set, Go evacuation guide is available in English and Spanish here: https://tinyurl.com/RSGNM. For disaster assistance resources, visit: https://www.nmdhsem.org/2022-wildfires/.

Weather: The warmer and drier pattern will continue through Thursday with isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Another surge of monsoonal moisture will reach the area on Friday and remain in place through the weekend. This will result in more widespread precipitation. Overall, the flooding and debris flow threat is low through the weekend unless a strong thunderstorm develops directly over a high severity burn scar area.

Closures and Restrictions: The Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fires closure orders covering the Pecos/Las Vegas District of the Santa Fe National Forest and Camino Real Ranger District of the Carson National Forest remain in place.
