Red Flag Warning Saturday Across the Homestead Complex
The Homestead Complex includes seven fires that total 2,362 acres and are currently 5% contained. There are 481 personnel currently working on the fire. Fire managers are directing resources to fires based on threats to property, infrastructure, industry, and areas with the highest probability of success.
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for an area that includes the Homestead Complex. Thunderstorms will be moving through the area from the south, with the eastern half of the complex most likely to be affected. Incident resources are prepared to work with local agencies to respond to any new fires.
Outflow winds from passing thunderstorms could affect fire behavior. Wind gusts up to 50 mph may increase the rate of spread of fire on the landscape. Fires most likely to see increased activity with today’s weather system are Horse Heaven Creek (680 acres), Bullpup (174 acres), Fuller Lake (117 acres), and Reynolds Butte (278 acres).
Since the warming trend began, hotshot crews have been working with Douglas Forest Protective Association late into the night to respond to spot fires on No Man Fire (899 acres), including a 10-acre spot fire near North Chilcoot and Forest Road 3821. As of this morning, all spot fires have been contained. Resources are focused on protecting important values including private and forest timber, communications infrastructure, and wildlife habitat.
Personnel are using direct line to protect values at risk on the Salmon 33 Fire (187 acres) and are patrolling the east flank of the fire. Crews continue preparing and improving indirect lines with hose lay to minimize the footprint of the Reynolds Butte Fire.
Across the Homestead Complex firefighters continue to strengthen indirect lines along roads and existing trails. Strengthening these existing features is safer, more efficient, and more effective than constructing direct line in steep, rugged, remote terrain.
The Lost Bucket Fire (34 acres) was contained on July 29.
Current forest fire restrictions and danger ratings are: Fire Danger Rating: Very High. Industrial Fire Precaution Levels (IFPLs): 3. Public Use Fire Restrictions (PURs): 3.
