 Chalk Mountain Fire Update

August 1, 2022 10:00 a.m.

Chalk Mountain Fire Stats:

Size: 6,755 Acres

Containment: 89%

Location: 4.6 miles SW of Glen Rose, TX

Start Date: July 18, 2022

Cause: Under Investigation

Total Resources Assigned: 201

The Southern Area Blue Type-I Incident Management Team assumed command of the Chalk Mountain Fire at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2022.

Current Status:

Progress toward full containment of the Chalk Mountain Fire continues as the total percentage increased to 89 percent. Firefighters have spent the last several operational periods gridding and extinguishing hotspots throughout the fire. Special emphasis continues to be in areas around homes and near the fireline. Yesterday, a flareup occurred several hundred feet within the fire perimeter. Air resources dropped water to cool the area long enough to allow ground crews time to reach the flareup. Last night, firefighters lined and extinguished the hotspot.

While the fire is nearing full containment, the occasional flareup is still possible due to areas of unburned or partially burned fuel remaining within the fire perimeter. These areas are intermixed with sporadic hotspots, and firefighters are continuing to seek out and eliminate these areas of heat. Firefighters will continue gridding for any remaining heat sources today.

Fire Weather:

An upper-level ridge remains in place overhead resulting in hot and dry conditions throughout the region. Highs today will be near 103 degrees with relative humidity falling to a low of 20 percent. Winds will be out of the southeast at 10 mph with gusts up to 15 mph.
