Das Goat Fire Update March 27, 2022 11:30am
Size: estimated 958 acres
Containment: 20%
Personnel: 72
The Das Goat Fire in Medina County ignited on March 25, 2022 under warm, dry and windy conditions. Critically dry grass and juniper vegetation supported ignition and growth of the fire with some spotting of flammable materials ahead of the flaming front.
Yesterday, operational tactics focused on direct and indirect containment line construction and structure protection with ground crews. Aviation resources, including large airtankers, fire boss single engine air tankers and helicopters, provided support via water and retardant drops to help slow the spread of the fire and protect structures. Fire behavior moderated overnight but the fire remains active. Additional resources arrived on the fire throughout the day and overnight to assist with suppression efforts.
Today, resources will continue building containment line focusing on the northern portion of the fire with the goal of holding the fire south of the Medina River. Aviation resources, including Blackhawks and fire boss single engine air tankers, will be dropping water across the fire area to slow the spread and help check containment lines.
Weather:
Current conditions in the area have improved since the evening. Wind speeds this afternoon will reach 10-12 mph and some gusts around 20 mph are expected. With warm afternoon temperatures topping out in the upper 80s to near 90 and dry air mixing down from aloft, the relative humidity will dip into the mid to upper teens this afternoon. Rapid fire growth will again be possible as a result of the dry air and moderate winds.
