Salt Creek Fire Update Spanish Language 07 15 2024

Related Incident: Salt Creek
Publication Type: News

Contención del Incendio Salt Creek Fire alcanza un 58%

EAGLE POINT, Ore.

Shoofly Fire

Acreage: 101 acres

Containment: 56%

Cause: Undetermined

Personnel: 78

Leavenworth, WA – The Shoofly Fire located on the Wenatchee River Ranger District, roughly 25 miles west of Lake Wenatchee, WA is staying within its current footprint on the southeast slope of Shoofly Mountain in steep terrain of an old burn scar. Fire behavior has been minimal, and the fire is being held in place by a combination of firefighting efforts and favorable fuel conditions. Crews will continue to secure the fire perimeter using full-suppression tactics that minimize ecosystem impacts, supported by aircraft operations.

Due to the hazardous terrain and the presence of many dead-standing trees in the old burn scar, risk mitigation and firefighter safety are of utmost importance. Firefighters and fellers are working to reduce the risk of falling trees by felling them in work areas. Helicopters have been dropping buckets of water on hotspots to cool them down, allowing firefighters to work safely on the ground. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) were utilized to detect hotspots, further reducing the risk to firefighters by limiting exposure in rough terrain areas that are not experiencing heat.

These combined efforts have allowed firefighters to make significant progress in gaining containment on the northern edge of the fire. This area will be monitored and patrolled over the coming days. The terrain in the southeast portion of the fire remains challenging. Crews continue to work safely in these difficult areas as conditions allow. Fire managers will meet today to assess current incident complexity and needs. As work progresses, excess food and supplies are being redirected to support the local community cupboard.

Trail and Road Closures: A closure order remains in place for the affected area. See posted Closure Order: 06-17-07-24-11 or visit the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest Closure Order Webpage for more information. The Pacific Crest Trail is open and not threatened at this time but is located about 2 miles west of the fire. Recreationists are asked to avoid this area to allow firefighters to work safely, and follow the updates campfire and personal use restrictions, which have been upgraded to Stage 1.

Wildfire Smoke Preparedness: Go to https://wasmoke.blogspot.com for tips on what you can do to prepare for smoky conditions. Salt Creek Fire Update 07 15 2024

Related Incident: Salt Creek
Publication Type: News

Salt Creek Fire containment increases to 58%

EAGLE POINT, Ore. – Containment increased to 58% on the Salt Creek Fire as firefighters continue mop up. The northern portion of the fire has 300 feet of cold black adjacent to the fireline in most areas, and crews are beginning to remove hose and other equipment from the fire while patrolling and monitoring the fire. Firefighters in other areas of the fire continue to locate hot spots and mop up fuels, like burning roots and down material.

Crews are conducting repair activities, such as minimizing soil erosion and protecting water quality, across the fire area. On steep slopes, water bars will be placed on control lines and roads to divert water to areas with natural vegetation, minimizing soil disturbance. Crews began dispersing berms made from soil displaced from fireline construction. Removing berms allows for natural water drainage.

A red flag warning is in effect today for abundant lightning and isolated to scattered thunderstorms across the region. Dry fuels and strong, erratic winds could cause rapid growth for any new fires. Resources from the Salt Creek Fire are ready to support initial attack for any new starts.

More than 1,000 personnel are assigned to the fire, including 41 20-person crews, 30 engines, 19 water tenders, seven tree fallers and seven dozers. Released resources may return to their home units or reassigned to other incidents across the state.

BLM Medford District has temporarily closed BLM-managed lands in the area for safety. For more info go to: https://www.blm.gov/orwafire

Level 1, “BE READY,” evacuation notices issued by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management remain in effect. Learn more about evacuations at: https://protect.genasys.com/

The current fire danger level is extreme; follow all fire restrictions to help prevent fires. Learn more at:

The Salt Creek Fire is located 10 miles east of Eagle Point and was first reported Sunday, July 7, just after 4 p.m. The cause is under investigation.

Actualizacin del incendio Pioneer del 15 de julio 2024 07 15 2024

Related Incident: Pioneer
Publication Type: News

Fecha de inicio: 8 de junio, 2024

Ubicación: 31 millas al noroeste de Chelan, WA

Contención:  14%

Tamaño del incendio: 18,731 acres

Causa: Causado por personas, bajo investigación

Personal total: 786

Yeso Fire Update Crews Continue to Secure Control Lines 07 15 2024

Related Incident: Yeso Fire
Publication Type: News

After a successful day of operations on the Yeso Fire’s edge, Carson National Forest fire crews will today evaluate interior areas, chip fuels along roads and may conduct limited firing operations if needed. The fire stands at 300 acres with no containment.

Crews yesterday completed blackline around the entire fire’s perimeter. Blacklining is pre-burning fuels along the control line, which are primarily roads for this wildfire.

The area remains open, including the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and Forest Service roads. The driving public is asked to keep speeds down while around fire personnel and equipment.

The lightning-caused Yeso Fire was first reported on July 9. For safety, crews are using a less aggressive strategy to indirectly contain the fire along existing roads while it provides ecosystem benefits within the interior.

“The fire effects are looking good so far,” said District Ranger Angie Krall. “This work will tie in nicely with the nearby Canjilon Wildland Urban Interface Project.”

That project to reduce the risk of wildfire around the village of Canjilon has been in the works since 2011. The Yeso Fire is near the project’s south side, where fire managers are planning to continue prescribed fire operations this fall.

An overview of the Yeso Fire suppression strategy and area fire ecology is available on the Carson National Forest website.

Northern Rockies Team 3, Incident Commander Mike Behrens

Location:  17 miles south of Birney, Montana and north of Tongue River Reservoir in Rosebud and Big Horn Counties

Start Date: 7/12 and 7/13/2024

Cause: Lightning

Size: 22,208 estimated combined total acres

Completion/Containment:

KEY MESSAGE

Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 3, Incident Commander Mike Behrens, took command of these fires at 6:00 AM today.

Numerous fires were ignited in southeast Montana by dry lightning on July 12 and 13. Team 3 will manage several of these fires. The Deadman Fire and the Anderson Fire burned together on Sunday, reaching an estimated combined 15,294 acres. The combined Deadman/Anderson fires will be referred to as Deadman.

CURRENT STATUS

Landowners, ranchers, local fire departments, and state and federal land agencies have worked incredibly hard the past several days fighting these fires and have made significant progress. Crews and landowners have been building miles of fire lines and conducting burnout operations to gain ground. Last night, the McGhee Fire pushed northwest towards Birney. Today, the Flathead Interagency Hotshot Crew and other resources will be working to connect pieces of fire line to secure that part of the fire. The prevailing wind direction today should help. The team is assessing needs, developing a plan, and ordering resources, although as fire season picks up in Montana, resources will begin to be stretched.

WEATHER AND FIRE BEHAVIOR

Fuel moistures are low, making fire behavior erratic even without strong winds. Fire continues to carry in the grass and mixed shrubs, even overnight. Spotting may be an issue throughout the day, especially as winds increase. Hot and dry conditions are expected into the foreseeable future.

CLOSURES AND SPECIAL MESSAGES

An evacuation warning remains in place for residents along the Tongue River Road from the Tongue River Bridge at Wall Creek to the southern Rosebud County line.  Specific closure information and maps on the Rosebud and/or Big Horn County Facebook Pages.
