Containment increases to 39 percent on the Lolo Fire 07 11 2024

Related Incident: Lolo Fire
Publication Type: News

QUEMADO, NM, July 11, 2024 – The Lolo Fire is 412 acres with 39% containment along the southern perimeter. Tasks for this area will include patrols and maintaining control features where crews have completed mop-up work which included mitigating hazards and hotspots along the fire boundary. Primary source of fire activity will be on the north and east side as fire continues to back down to areas accessible for firefighters to engage it. Tasks being performed in this area include structure protection for private property north of the fire and reducing fuels along roads that may be used as containment features.

A small amount of moisture will move into the fire area over the next day or two, increasing the chances of storms and helping to maintain low- to moderate fire behavior. Minimum relative humidity (RH) levels will drop to between 20 to 25%, but temperatures are expected to cool. RH levels will rise by late afternoon, with winds and storms possibly affecting the fire area. Storm chances will continue into the weekend with increased storm chances expected on Sunday and continuing into early next week.

A variety of tactics will be used to contain the fire. This may include using hand line to eliminate fuels along planned perimeters, protection of range infrastructure, hand ignitions, and other suppression tactics as changing conditions require to protect values at risk and bring low- to moderate-intensity fire out to control features and establish containment. News releases will be provided every two days unless there are significant updates.

You can obtain updated information for the Lolo Fire on Inciweb at https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/nmgnf-lolo-fire. Have you registered to receive emergency notifications from Catron County? If not, please take a moment to visit CodeRed to register for emergency alerts at https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/en-US/B4CA52DAB2AA

Smoke will be visible from Quemado, Quemado Lake Estates, Mangas, and Pie Town, and is likely to settle into low lying areas during overnight and early morning hours. When smoke impacts are present, New Mexico Department of Health recommends that smoke sensitive individuals should reduce physical activity and stay indoors with windows and doors closed. For those who are unable to avoid smoke exposure, use of a particulate respirator mask can help. Additional air quality information and health protection measures are posted online at NM-Tracking - Fires, Smoke and Health. Real-time mapping of smoke and other air quality impacts is available at https://fire.airnow.gov. For more information contact Maribeth Pecotte at 575-388-8211 or Maribeth.Pecotte@usda.gov.

Oak Ridge Fire Update

Friday, July 12, 2024

Type 3 Incident Management Organization

Pat Seekins, Incident Commander

Location: Three miles northwest of Beulah, CO

Date Reported: June 22, 2024

Cause: Lightning

Size: 1,310 acres

Containment: 89%

Total Personnel: 123

Containment on the Oak Ridge Fire has increased to 85%. On Thursday, hand crews prepped for chipping on the east side of the perimeter. This consisted of firefighters setting aside brush to be more efficient during the process. Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) drones with infrared detection continue to be used to detect and map areas of heat. Crews have also been removing any flagging materials, along with markings and signage in the fire area. Our goal is to leave the area in the best condition possible by removing anything that was used for previous suppression actions. Firefighters also burned a nearby slash pile on the west side of the Beulah Fire Department. The slash pile is where Beulah locals are disposing their cut vegetation from their fire mitigation work.

Today, crews will be breaking down hose lays and portable water tanks in DIV K, on the southern end of the fire. Firefighters will be pre-positioning this equipment to be removed by vehicles and helicopter. Helicopter crewmembers will be packaging equipment into cargo nets to prepare for early morning helicopter operations to remove it off the hill on Saturday. Crews will continue chipping operations up the hill towards the fire perimeter in DIV K, which could last up to seven days. A resource advisor has been evaluating dozer lines on the west end of the fire to prepare for heavy equipment that will begin suppression repair on Saturday. Heavy equipment will be used to construct water bars, install natural barriers to prevent inappropriate vehicle access and to repair areas to the best extent feasible and necessary.

Weather & Smoke Information: The chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms dwindles as the week advances, however, there is a 15-20% chance of rain this afternoon. Showers are not likely to produce much if any rain, but could produce wind gusts up to 30 mph. As high pressure strengthens across the region, temperatures will rise close to the lower 90’s.

The U.S. Interagency Fire Air Quality Response Program daily smoke outlook report specific to the fire area may be found at https://outlooks.airfire.org/outlook/d9fa3c77

Closures: The San Carlos Ranger District of the Pike and San Isabel National Forests issued an area, trail and road closure effective June 26, 2024. Go to www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/psicc/alerts-notices for the entire order.

Evacuations: There are currently no evacuations from county sheriff offices due to the Oak Ridge Fire.

Temporary Flight Restrictions: The is a 24-hour a day Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the fire area remains in effect. The TFR includes restrictions against private drones and all air incursions will be reported to law enforcement.

Last night, helicopters were utilized to support engines and hand crews in strengthening containment lines. Firefighting personnel continue their round-the-clock efforts to enhance containment lines and structure defense in local communities.

Yesterday firefighters successfully went direct on the Shelly Fire’s northeastern front, pushing from east to west between Mill Creek and Kidder Creek. Crews went direct in the Patterson Creek drainage area and west along Patterson Road, utilizing water and retardant drops from both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. In the southern and western fronts, the fire made some small runs near Shelly Lake along the Pacific Crest Trail, prompting a swift aerial response, consistent with the full-suppression strategy.

Away from the fire’s immediate perimeter, crews persistently work to fortify secondary lines from Kidder Creek to Whisky Butte on the eastern front, and from Scott Bar Road to Sawyers Bar Road. Structure protection plans are in place with engines strategically placed to protect the communities.

Evacuation orders or warnings remain in place for 4,200 people in the area, with over 3,800 residential and 300 commercial structures threatened.

Royal Fire Update 8 07 12 2024

Related Incident:
Publication Type: Announcement

Firefighters continue to hold and improve control lines and mop up as necessary to maintain containment. Fire activity has remained moderate the past few days and the fire’s footprint has not grown in 48 hours. High pressure and extreme heat are expected to continue over the fire through the weekend. Low humidity and fuel moistures provide the opportunity for growth. This weekend, dry lightning is forecasted over the fire area which may test holding features and constructed fire lines. Increased fire behavior is possible if increased wind or rollout moves fire across holding lines. Tahoe National Forest is maintaining initial attack resources on scene due to expected lightning activity and possible outflow winds that may threaten containment efforts.

Suppression repair needs continue to be identified. The goal of suppression repair is to return damaged areas to a stable condition that reflects pre-fire conditions. Firefighters will work alongside forest resource advisors throughout the suppression repair process.

There are approximately 360 individual personnel assigned to the Royal Fire. Firefighting resources include 4 Type 1 helicopters, 1 Type 2 helicopter, 1 air attack, 1 Type 1 24-hour hoist-capable rescue helicopter, 10 crews, 9 engines, 5 dozers, 9 water tenders and 1 excavator.

Shoofly Fire Update- July 10, 2024

The Shoofly Fire located on the Wenatchee River Ranger District, roughly 25 miles west of Lake Wenatchee, WA is burning on the southeast slope of Shoofly Mountain in steep terrain. The Shoofly Fire is estimated at 101 acres (corrected acreage) and is burning in sub-alpine fir and an older burn scar along the western flank of the fire.

The fire made minimal movement today and is being held in place by a combination of firefighting efforts and fuel conditions. Crews will continue securing the fire perimeter utilizing minimal impact suppression tactics and aircraft operations.

More crews have arrived at the fire to expedite fireline construction and help support new emerging fires. There are currently 110 firefighters assigned in addition to aerial resources.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Road Closures: The 6701 Road that accesses the Top Lake and Heather Lake Trails, is closed at the junction with the 6700 Rainy Creek Road. The 6700 Smithbrook/Rainy Creek Road will remain open.

Trail and Campground Closures: The Top Lake Trail #1506, Heather Lake Trail #1526 and Minotaur Lake Trail #1517 are closed. The closure notification has been posted at key junctions and trailheads warning of fire activity and trail closures. Rainy Campground is closed.

The Pacific Crest Trail is open and not threatened at this time but is located about 2 miles west of the fire.

Recreationists are asked to avoid this area to allow firefighters to work safely, and follow the updates campfire and personal use restrictions, which have been upgraded to Stage 1.

A red flag warning is in place for hot temperatures, wind and low humidity in the Central Cascades through Wednesday evening.

Ridge Fire Daily Update 7122024 07 12 2024

Related Incident: Ridge Fire
Publication Type: News

Fire activity remains low on the Ridge Fire

Daily Update – Friday, July 12, 2024

Acres: 2,245

Start Date: 7/4/2024

Location: 19 miles east of Glenwood, NM

Personnel: 290

Containment: 0%

Fuels: Timber, grass, understory

Highlights: Fire activity was limited yesterday by increased moisture around the Ridge Fire area. Minimal fire activity is expected again today as relative humidity remains high. To provide information and answer questions about the Ridge Fire, the Southwest Incident Management Team 4 will host a community open house at the Willow Creek Ranch, located at 257 Willow Creek Road, on Saturday, July 13, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Operations: Despite thunderstorms in the area, little moisture fell directly on the fire yesterday. The fire continued to burn with low intensity to the south and east through the Gila Wilderness. In the Iron Creek drainage, fire slowly backed down the slopes toward Cooper Canyon, producing beneficial fire effects on the landscape. To the east, firefighters observed the fire smoldering along the forest floor with very minimal open flame. Several crews worked in the Willow Creek area, improving planned containment lines along Trail #151 (West Fork Trail) and handlines to the west and south of the Willow Creek subdivision. Additional crews and engines arrived to support fire operations in this area, spending the day collecting information to inform their suppression strategy. Today, the fire is expected to slowly burn through dead and downed logs from past wildfires, particularly in areas that do not receive rain. Firefighters will continue to focus their efforts on preventing fire spread to the west using handlines and the West Fork Trail to minimize impacts to values in Iron Creek and Willow Creek.

Weather: Scattered thunderstorms moved through the area yesterday. Friday morning will have clear skies with light and variable winds increasing to 5 to 10 mph by afternoon. Thunderstorm activity will

be limited to isolated cells off the higher mountain tops in the early afternoon.

Smoke: Smoke may be visible from Mogollon, Willow Creek, and Snow Lake. An interactive smoke map at https://fire.airnow.gov/ allows you to zoom into your area to see the latest smoke conditions.

Closures: There are currently no closures in place for the Ridge Fire on the Gila National Forest. A closure for affected trails within the fire area is anticipated in the near future. Due to increased firefighter presence in the area, members of the public should stay away from Ridge Fire operations.

Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the first priority. A temporary flight restriction (TFR) is in place over the area, which includes uncrewed aircraft or drones. Flying drones near wildfires is dangerous for pilots and firefighters and can bring wildfire suppression efforts to a halt. Know before you fly. If you fly, we can’t. More information on the dangers drones pose to wildland firefighting aircraft and personnel on the ground can be found at: https://uas.nifc.gov/
