The Lake Fire has reached more than 34,000 acres and is now split into a North and South Zone as the fire expands in acreage and personnel. The fire remains under Unified Command, with two fire camps to support firefighting efforts.

South Zone Fire Activity: The fire has now been divided into two zones, the North Zone led by CIIMT13 with US Forest Service and the South Zone led by IMT5 with CAL Fire. The purpose of zoning the fire is to ensure strategic, logistical, and operational functions are met; as this fire has grown in complexity. Today, crews continue to actively fight fire while working on strengthening containment and control lines.

North Zone Fire Activity: The Lake Fire has not crossed Happy Canyon Road as crews hold the fire. The Davy Brown area has moderate fire behavior. Ground crews are doing good work in efforts to manage fire spread around the Sisquoc River Drainage. Tactical firing operations are working well to reduce burnable fuels ahead of the fire and continue today. Ground crews are working with various aircraft today to help with suppression tactics.

Forecast for Thursday: No significant changes are expected. Winds will shift to a more westerly direction, with speeds generally light at 5-10 mph and gusts up to 15 mph, with some local gusts reaching 25 mph on ridges above 3500 feet. Afternoon highs will return to the 90s, with relative humidity values dropping to 10-20%.

Approximately 2,166 people within the evacuation warnings and order areas have been impacted by the Lake Fire.

Lake Fire Background: On July 5, 2024, firefighters from the Los Padres National Forest and Santa Barbara County Fire responded to a vegetation fire near Zaca Lake that grew rapidly through grass and brush during a prolonged heat wave across the west coast. A significant number of firefighting resources are working the incident, including hand crews, engines, dozers, and air resources for water and retardant drops. The fire is under Unified Command with California Complex Incident Management Team 13, Santa Barbara County Fire and CAL FIRE.

Hillside Update for Thursday July 11 2024 07 11 2024

Related Incident: Hillside Fire
Publication Type: News

Summary: Thursday morning, operations flew the fire’s perimeter and mapped it at 807 acres. The decrease in acreage is due to more accurate mapping. The fire remains active on all sides and continues to push toward the east and the south, burning through steep and rugged terrain in places within a mixed fuel type of grass, brush, and Pinyon-juniper.

Along the northwest side overnight, hand crews went indirect on the fire with firing operations and were able to get line in around structures in the area. The northeast side of the fire remains the most active. Today fire resources continue with structure protection to residences to the east of the fire along with conducting point protection efforts to values at risk including the mine, mining infrastructure, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line, and power lines. Firefighters are also trying to keep the fire from impacting Congress and the Sonoran Desert. Two state hand crews are going direct on that side of the fire and putting in line along that flank. Two Single Engine Air Tankers are engaged dropping retardant to help slow the fire’s progress to the east. Two helicopters have also been ordered to help support resources working that side of the fire. The helicopters will use a reservoir near Piedmont to dip from and due to the proximity, turnaround time for bucket support work will be quick. On the southeast side of the fire, a dozer operator is working to put in fire line on State Trust land. Hillside Fire operations plans to tie the dozer line in with State Route 89 to keep the fire from impacting Congress.

The fire stayed active on all sides throughout the night. Today, as temperatures heat up, fire activity along with behavior may increase. The fire is burning in very steep and rugged terrain on the north and east sides of the fire. Medic support teams have been ordered to help support resources working in those areas. The main priority for operations on any and all fires is the safety of the crews and the public. Crews are working under very hot and dry conditions. Extra ground resources are on order to provide additional support and allow for more crew breaks. On the southwest side of the fire, open mine shafts are creating another hazard for resources.

Per the Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management, SET remains in effect for residences along Ghost Town Road. Residents should be alert and stay aware of the weather and changing conditions. Prepare a go bag to include, personal items, prescriptions, water and snacks, important documents, identification cards, and money. Residents who live in Yavapai County can sign up for emergency alerts at: https://www.ycsoaz.gov/I-Want-To/Services/Sign-up-for-Emergency-Notifications. Management action points ahead of the fire’s perimeter have been established by fire operations to act as a notification should additional SET or GO notifications need to be made.

Weather: An excessive heat warning is in effect through Thursday at 8pm. Monsoonal moisture continues to increase through the weekend with greater chances for thunderstorms, including outflow winds over the fire area today and over the next few days.

Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the highest priority. Open mine shafts, extreme temperatures, rugged terrain and other identified hazards within the fire area remain a safety concern for fire operations. Additional medic teams have been ordered to support firefighters. Firefighting aircraft and drones are a dangerous combination. Drones in the area could lead to accidents or slow down wildfire suppression operations. If you fly…we can’t.

Lockett Fire operations nearing completion 07 11 2024

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Crews completed planned ignitions around the entire perimeter and in the interior of the Lockett Fire planning area yesterday, bringing the total number of acres treated to 2,782.

Helicopter operations will continue today to locate areas which did not receive fire effects and determine if further isolated ignitions are required. Crews on the perimeter of the planning area will be patrolling to ensure the fire stays within containment lines, and resource advisors will work to identify areas requiring rehabilitation, such as on dozer lines, hand lines, and other areas impacted by firefighter activity to mitigate potential erosion issues in the future. Crews and equipment will be working along forest roads and smoke may cause decreased visibility – drive with caution.

The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) will remain in effect today and is expected to lift by tomorrow morning.

Although ignitions are complete, smoke and isolated flames will still be visible in the days to come as larger dead-and-down fuels, large stumps, and some snags continue to be consumed. Increasing cloud cover, humidity, and chances for rain coupled with decreasing temperatures will moderate remaining fire activity, resulting in fewer visible flames and decreased smoke production on the Lockett Fire. Winds will continue carrying smoke to the south, settling in low areas in the vicinity of the fire at night. The National Weather Service forecast calls for an increasing chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms this weekend and into next week.

Eighty personnel from the USDA Forest Service and National Park Service are currently assigned to the Lockett Fire. Crews will begin to be released from the incident in the coming days, with some crews remaining to patrol the Lockett Fire and be readily available for initial attack on any new fires in the area.

Managing naturally caused wildfires across the landscape is a very effective tool in restoring the forest to a healthier condition, and these efforts align with the Forest Service's 10-year Wildfire Crisis Strategy, which aims to increase the use of fire on the landscape as well as other treatments to improve forest resiliency for generations to come.
