Riley firefighters tackle hotspots with aerial support
HEALY, Alaska – Significant progress was made yesterday on securing the fire’s edge towards increased containment and fire managers are confident that 96% of the line is now contained. Fire personnel continue to seek out heat within and along the fire perimeter aided by uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS). As hotspots are identified, firefighters are working with aerial bucket drops to cool remaining heat. Additionally, a Helicopter Short Haul Unit (HSHU) arrived on the fire yesterday to aid in emergency medical transport if needed. The Riley Fire is in steep and difficult terrain, HSHUs are designed to extract personnel in an emergency by removing them with a helicopter short line and transporting to medical facilities or ambulance.
Weather: Cool and cloudy weather will linger today with a slight warming and drying trend beginning tomorrow Wednesday, July 10th.
Park Opening: At 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10th the National Park Service and Denali National Park Tours Doyon/Aramark Joint Venture will welcome visitors back to the park. The entirety of park operations will resume, apart from Riley Creek Campground, Riley Creek Day Use Area, and the Horseshoe Lake Trail, which will remain closed due to firefighting support activities in the area. Furthermore, the Alaska Railroad and Denali Depot into will return to normal full-service operations on Wednesday.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Crews will continue to secure the line in the 5 Mile Creek Area by consolidating and piling up unburned or partially burned vegetation and debris. This process reduces fuel loads and minimizes the potential for fire spread. The piles are then burned in a controlled manner when conditions are safe, helping to secure the fireline. Crews will also continue to grid the area, searching for and extinguishing pockets of heat while mopping up. Crews will look for opportunities to implement fireline in the southernmost part of the 5 Mile Creek Area. A fire module remains on lookout.
Low temperatures and high relative humidity will continue to keep fire activity minimal. Localized areas of smoke may be seen in areas where black spruce is the primary vegetation component.
Weather: Cooler than average temperatures will continue. Cloud cover will dominate with spotty showers over the fire area.
Burn Permits: The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection has lifted the Burn Permit suspensions for Fairbanks, Salcha, Delta, Tok, and Railbelt areas. Small and large scale burn permits are required. Burning is allowed today. The fire danger in these areas is MODERATE. Please check https://dnr.alaska.gov/burn/fireareas or call the burn permit hotline for DOF Fairbanks Area Forestry at (907) 451-2631 for the most current updates.
Evacuation Notices: A Level 2: SET evacuation notice is in effect for about 20 cabins near the fire’s southeastern edge west of the Tanana River. Communities east of the Tanana River are in READY status, including the Johnson Road neighborhoods, Canaday, Harding Lake, Salcha, the Lower Salcha River, Hollies Acres, and south to Birch Lake. Find more information and an interactive map of these areas on the Fairbanks North Star Borough Emergency Services website.
Temporary Flight Restriction: The temporary flight restriction (TFR) has been adjusted based on public input to give float plane access to Harding Lake. Be aware helicopter operations to support the fire still continue in the area. Visit tfr.faa.gov for more information.

Cause: Unknown / Under Investigation
Location: 5 miles south of Soda Springs, Calif. Royal Gorge, North Fork of the American River
Suppression Strategy: Full Suppression
CURRENT SITUATION
The Royal Fire did not experience significant growth overnight. Reported acreage is due to more accurate mapping by FIRIS. There has been little progress on containment due to extremely steep and difficult to access terrain. The fire is currently boxed in with retardant. Significant aerial resources continue to monitor and attack the incident. Ground crews continue to work on building handline and dozer line around the fire.
The fire is active with crews reporting short-range spotting, tree crowning and short uphill runs. High-pressure and extreme heat is expected over the fire area for the next several days. Low humidity and dry fuels are contributing to resistance of containment measures.
The Tahoe National Forest has issued a closure for the fire footprint and surrounding fire area for the safety of the public and firefighter personnel.
Current resources assigned to the Royal Fire include: 1 Type 2 helicopter, 6 Type 1 helicopters including 2 Type 1 night-flying water dropper, 2 night-flying capable UAS (drones), 1 Type 3 hoist-capable helicopter, 24 crews, 16 engines, 5 dozers and several support staff (overhead).
