Encerrita Fire Thursday Update 06 20 2024

Related Incident: Encerrita Fire
Publication Type: News

As forecasted, winds ahead of the frontal passage Wednesday night led to increased fire activity on the lightning-caused Encerrita Fire, located 15 miles south-southwest of Grants. As the fire grew northward, pushed by a strong south wind, firefighters were able to hold the fire south and east of Highway 53. Crews were assisted by the East Encerrito prescribed fire area, which reduced available fuels on 379 acres south of Highway 53 in April. The Encerrita Fire is now 2279 acres.

With another planned wind event late Wednesday evening, firefighters worked until 2 a.m. ensuring that the fire did not cross the highway and limiting fire spread onto neighboring jurisdictions. With the front’s passage, humidity levels increased leading to decreased fire activity. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecasted over the fire area today with the potential for overcast skies and significant rainfall over the coming days. The increase in humidity and rain will give firefighters an opportunity to establish containment lines on the west and north sides of the fire in the coming days.

After a brief closure of Highway 53 overnight on Tuesday and into Wednesday morning, the highway is now open in both directions. Road closures may be reestablished if smoke limits visibility or if fire operations are occurring close to the roadway. Motorists are urged to slow down on Highway 53 and be alert to keep firefighters and themselves safe. El Malpais would like to thank the fire departments in Cibola County, Cibola County County OEM, Cibola County Sheriff’s Office, and the New Mexico Department of Transportation for their assistance with road closures and public notifications during Wednesday’s fire activity.

Closures remain in effect in the monument. The Continental Divide Trail (CDT) and Zuni-Acoma Trail are closed in El Malpais National Monument from Porter Ranch Rd off Hwy 53 to Hwy 117; a CDT bypass is in place between CDT miles 502.5 to 512.5; more information is available on the CDT website. Both the western Zuni-Acoma Trail parking lot and the eastern Acoma-Zuni Trail parking lot are included in the closure. Closures have been posted and the public is asked to avoid closed roads, trails, and parking lots. The El Calderon Trail remains open.

Fire Activity

Wednesday, the South Fork Fire experienced active fire behavior through the early part of the day until storms moved into the fire area. Firefighters observed torching trees, uphill runs where wind and terrain aligned and short-range spotting across the South Fork and Salt fires, including within the dead/down fuels of the 2012 Little Bear Fire. In addition to responding to and catching several spot fires yesterday, firefighters worked to secure a portion of the South Fork eastern perimeter from Cedar Creek to eagle Creek (~3 miles) and the south side from Cedar Creek to Flume Canyon.

The north and eastern sides of the South Fork Fire remain the focus for today’s operations, including North Fork and South Fork of Eagle Creek, and along the Rio Ruidoso.  Crews will continue constructing firelines to prevent further fire growth, while continuing to protect homes, properties, and critical infrastructure. Ground and aerial ignitions may be used where needed to strengthen protection of values at risk and burn out fuels between constructed firelines and the main fire.

Weather

On Wednesday, the South Fork and Salt fires received varying amounts of rain.  The highest rainfall recorded was 1.62” along Skyline Ridge near the Monjeau Fire Lookout on the northern side of the South Fork Fire, while rainfall on the Salt Fire measured .05”. Thursday’s incoming weather will produce clouds, cooler temperatures (68-75 degrees) and higher day/night relative humidity. Storms will likely develop over the lower east slopes of the Sacramento Mountains in the afternoon and into the early evening, producing 20-30mph gusts. Heavy rain, flash floods and debris flows are a potential risk from these storms through the week.

Smoke

Smoke will continue to be observed across both the South Fork and Salt fires today. Individuals sensitive to smoke should take precautions and use the New Mexico Department of Health 5-3-1 Visibility Method to determine if it’s safe to be outside. For more information visit Air Quality: https://nmtracking.doh.nm.gov/environment/air/FireAndSmoke.html

Evacuations

A State of Emergency for the Mescalero Apache Reservation has been implemented by the Tribal Council. Evacuations remain in-place. Village of Ruidoso and City of Ruidoso Downs are in “GO” evacuation status. Road closures are also in effect. Numerous additional evacuation orders have been issued including Fantasy Lane, Summit area, Botella Road, Snow Springs, Fence Canyon, Whitetail, and Chihuahua Well. Please stay out of the fire area to allow firefighters safe access into the area and allow them to work safely.  There are hazards in the area including fire weakened trees, downed power lines, and potential for exposed gas lines.

Road and trail closures are in effect throughout the fire area. Both Highway 48 and Highway 70 at
Apache Summit are closed; the open evacuation route is Highway 70 to Roswell. State Hwy 48 is closed from Alpine Village/University to State Hwy 220. US 70 is closed from mm 249 (intersection NM 244), 4 miles east of Mescalero, to mm 258, 2 miles east of Carrizo (https://www.ruidoso-nm.gov/south-fork-fire).

Closures

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is also in place over the fire area. Visit
https://www.tfr.faa.gov for more information. Drone flights are also prohibited within this area. If you fly, we may have to ground our air resources.

Incendio Pioneer Actualizado para el Jueves, 20 de Junio, 2024

CHELAN, Wash.

Si tú VUELAS, nosotros NO PODEMOS.

Pioneer Fire Update for Thursday, June 20, 2024

CHELAN, Wash. — The Pioneer Fire is burning in the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness Area in the Chelan Ranger District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and on private land 31 miles northwest of Chelan.  Stehekin, Chelan and Manson are open and continue to welcome visitors.

Infrared mapping shows the fire grew less than 300 acres since Sunday evening and is holding between Meadow Creek to the north and Prince Creek to the south. This is a full suppression fire and firefighters are using all available strategies and tactics to identify potential containment opportunities.

Today, a new operational branch will be established in Stehekin, staffed by two National Park Service wildland fire modules. An additional helibase is being established at Stehekin airport to support firefighting efforts on the north flank of the fire more directly.

Structure protection between Moore Point and Hunts Bluff is expected to be complete soon, along with structure protection of federal assets around Flick Creek. Protection measures around infrastructure and private homes between Rex and Canoe Creek are complete. Crews are patrolling and developing plans to reinforce these protections if needed.

Road work continues along the Grade Creek Road (8200 Road), where crews have reached the Poison Creek drainage near Camp Four. Hand crews and heavy equipment are also making progress on containment lines that may be needed in the future along Coyote Ridge between the lakeshore and Summer Blossom. Motorists should anticipate 30-minute delays and are encouraged to avoid the area. Antilon Lake remain open.

Yesterday, aviation resources flew several reconnaissance missions and delivered smoke monitoring equipment to Stehekin for more accurate reporting in addition to strategic water drops to cool and slow the fire edges while crews work on the ground. Tuesday, air resources logged 29.5 hours of flight time, transporting 36 personnel, 18,000 pounds of cargo, and 145,000 gallons of water.

EVACUATIONS: Evacuation levels have not changed since Sunday, June 16. Please visit County of Chelan, Washington for the most current information on evacuations.

Smoke & Air Quality: A wind shift expected later today could increase the likelihood of MODERATE conditions in Chelan, Manson, and Methow by the late evening with improvement overnight. Stehekin may see periods of MODERATE in the late afternoon as well. Check current air quality conditions at https://bit.ly/PioneerFireSmoke. Learn more about health impacts and becoming Smoke Ready at smokeready.org.

Closures: A public safety closure order is in effect for the Lakeshore Trail from Prince Creek up lake to the Lakeshore Trailhead at Stehekin and portions of the Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness. The closure includes Prince Creek, Cascade Creek, Moore Point, and Flick Creek (NPS) boat-in campgrounds. An interactive map of the Forest Service closure area can be found at https://arcg.is/0Wbivn

Interlaken Fire Update

June 20, 2024, at 9:00 a.m.
Type 3 Incident Management Team,
Nick Ostrom, Incident Commander

Location: 7 miles S-SW of Leadville, Colorado

Date Reported: June 11, 2024, at 2:01pm   Cause: Human caused

Size: 745 acres                                       Containment: 94%                                    Total Personnel: 226

Current Situation: Weather has given relief to the firefighters working on the Interlaken Fire. “I am impressed with all the hard work that has gone into fighting this fire, says Incident Commander Nick Ostrom, “We have made great progress in suppressing this fire in a short amount of time. The corporation from the community and local agencies has been the greatest example of teamwork.”

Local Resource Advisors are working closely with firefighters to implement suppression repair actions on the Interlaken fire. Suppression repair on a wildfire is completed to reduce the impacts that crews and equipment made during firefighting operations. Weather events, particularly rain, can cause surface soil to slide down hills, into gullies and streams. Repair efforts reduce potential soil erosion and repair damage to infrastructure. On the Interlaken Fire, this repair of suppression efforts is already underway throughout the fire area.

Crews are hauling hose and equipment off the line and back to camp. On the Interlaken fire hose lays were used to cool the fire along the containment line. This action used miles of hose to extinguish the hot spots. After the hoses are brought back to camp, supply camp crews inspect and re-roll the hose to be sent back to the fire cache (regional storage facility) to be cleaned and ready for the next fire.

Fire managers utilized Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) (drones) yesterday to detect any residual heat and identify any suppression actions that need to be addressed. Please remember. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the fire area. If you FLY, we CAN’T. Do not fly or operate your own drones in this area, as it will impede firefighting efforts and ground our aircraft.

Smoke: Air quality monitors in the area are indicating good and excellent around the Interlaken fire area.  https://www.colorado.gov/airquality/colo_smoke.aspx) Visit https://www.airnow.gov/wildfires/ for resources on smoke.

Weather: Expect an increase in showers and thunderstorms for Thursday and Friday with locally heavy rain possible. Maximum temperatures near 75 degrees with relative humidity 21-26 percent.

Closures: A reduction in the Forest Service closure order went into effect on 6-18-24. Several recreation sites, campgrounds and trails have reopened, however there is still closure area in effect. Please check the official order from the Forest Service. Refer to the PSICC website and check under FIRE RESTRICTIONS AND FOREST ORDERS on the main page.
