The Sourdough Fire was reported on Saturday, July 29, 2023. The fire is located in Ross Lake National Recreation Area and North Cascades National Park within North Cascades National Park Service Complex. The fire is burning in very steep terrain.
A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team was assigned on September 7, 2023 to evaluate the impacts of the Sourdough Fire on natural resources, cultural resources, and infrastructure. This team is composed of scientists and resource specialists including hydrologists, vegetation ecologists, GIS technicians, and archaeologists. These specialists work closely with the NPS to create a plan to mitigate the fire's impacts over the coming weeks, months, and years.
The team has finalized its recommendation plan for the North Cascades National Park Service Complex and has completed the closeout process. The plan will be implemented by Complex management over the coming weeks, months, and years.
