The west side of Palisade Mountain shows what can happen when a fire "runs" uphill. A running crown fire can cause a high rate of tree mortality though, as in this picture, pockets of green trees remain.

The crew of Boulder Fire-Rescue Engine 2538 responded to the initial attack phase of the Alexander Mountain Fire and have been working ever since. This is an example of both neighbors helping neighbors and how local responders remain an important component even after fire management is taken over by a Complex Incident Management Team (CIMT).

Mosaic Burn

Wildfires usually burn with a mix of fire intensities and the Alexander Mountain Fire was no different. In this view from the Sylvan Dale Ranch you can see everthing from unburned trees to areas of high severity. 

"Backhaul"

"Backhaul"

A pile of hose that has been "backhauled" off the fire lines and returned to camp. The machine at right is a hose roller. After it is rolled and packaged into a pallet of hose rolls, it will be returned to a national fire cache. After it is cleaned and inspected, hose that is still usable is put back into the system, ready for the next fire.
