Smoky Forest

A passing thunderstorm kicked up smoke on the Boulder Fire in the afternoon of August 5, 2024.

Observed fire behavior on 8/2/24.

When subalpine fir torch they toss thousands of embers (fire brands) into the air. Wind or convective heat currents carry them away. When they land in another patch of trees or other type of fuel bed they often start numerous new fires. This difficult reality is why fires like the Boulder Fire are so time consuming to contain, one tree can torch and start several new fires across containment lines.
