Lightning Sparks Easy Fire in Methow Valley Highway 20 Closed 07 18 2024

Related Incident: Easy Fire
Publication Type: News

Fire: Easy Fire
Containment: 0%
Acres: 300+
Start Date: July 17, 2024
Cause: Lightning
Location: 18 air miles west of Mazama, WA
Total Personnel: 35
Fuels/Topography: timber, rugged terrain

Yesterday: Firefighters responded to a new wildfire sparked by dry lightning storms moving through the Easy Pass area of the Methow Valley and immediately reported explosive fire growth and running crown fire into the evening. Crews stayed on the fire overnight but weeks of extreme temperatures, record dry conditions, and dangerous terrain with no road access hampered initial response efforts.

“Our goal is to stop any new growth on the Easy Fire, but this is a really rough spot,” said Chris Furr, Methow Valley District Ranger for the Forest Service. “Another day of low humidity, extreme heat, and dangerous ground conditions isn’t going to help.”

Today: Firefighters will continue scouting terrain where containment lines would be effective at stopping any new growth on the Easy Fire. Since there are no existing roads or other natural features to limit fire spread, fire managers will use a combination of ground crews to put in containment lines and air resources to cool off hotspots with water. Steep terrain will likely limit the ability of air tanker pilots to safely fly the fire area even if retardant were effective in dense timber where typically, little if any retardant reaches the ground.

“This is just a nasty piece of ground for ground and air resources,” added Furr. “In this first 24 hours we’re going to look at every option, every tool, we have to safety corral this thing but we're also bracing for the long-haul.”

Smoke: Air resource advisors are anticipating persistent smoke remaining at Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups with periods of Unhealthy to Very Unhealthy possible during evening hours as smoke settles into valley bottoms for the greater Methow Valley area. For more information on smoke and air quality please visit: https://wasmoke.blogspot.com/

Closures: Trails: Pacific Crest Trail in the Easy Pass/Rainy Pass area is closed as well as the Heather Maple Pass Trail due to closed road access. More details on other area trail closures will be shared as they become available. Roads: Highway 20 (North Cascades Highway) is fully closed between Granite Creek (MP 148) and east of the Rainy Pass Trail Head (MP 158) due to wildfire activity. Please check Washington State Department of Transportation information at https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/

Evacuations: None, there are no structures or homes threatened at this time.

Hill Fire Community Meeting, today, July 18, 2024, 7 p.m. at the Veterans Hall, Willow Creek, CA.

Current Situation:

Yesterday, fire activity moderated compared to previous days. Fire managers are using a full suppression strategy with crews going direct where possible while also utilizing indirect tactics in areas that pose a potential risk to firefighter safety. A few spot fires were identified to the north along Friday Ridge and resources on scene began constructing direct and indirect containment lines. Crews constructed dozer lines to the west and north of the fire. Aircraft continued to perform retardant drops along the perimeter of the fire.

Today, the primary focus will be to the north of the fire where crews will scout for possible opportunities to construct direct dozer line south of Route 1. Firefighters will also conduct firing operations along Route 1 to strengthen the potential containment line along Friday Ridge. Aircraft will continue to perform retardant drops to slow the spread of the fire. Federal and state air resources on scene include helicopters, air tankers, and air attack. Fire behavior is expected to be moderate today with continued dry conditions. The North Coast Interagency Type 3 Incident Management Team and CAL FIRE Incident Management Team 2 are now fully integrated and working in unified command.

Fire camp will be at the Veterans Park in Willow Creek, CA., beginning today, July 18, 2024.

Condon, Oregon — The Lone Rock Fire is being managed under a full suppression strategy by the unified command of the Northwest (NW) Team 2 and Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Red Team.

Yesterday’s Activities: Significant fire behavior emerged yesterday afternoon, leading to notable fire growth to the south. The fire's southward growth into timber fuels increases the likelihood of crown fires and long-range spotting. In the northwest area of the fire, firefighters made progress in securing the fire line. Last night, the fire remained highly active in the southern area, crossing Forest Service Road 21. Firefighters continued to hold the fire north of Forest Service Road 25. Firefighters worked through the night providing structure protection to the surrounding communities.

OSFM resources worked to mop up lines and further secure the community of Lonerock. Crews also worked to access and protect structures on the southern flank of the fire, as activity picked up in the afternoon.

Today’s Activities:  Firefighters are prepared to encounter increased fire behavior this afternoon. Wildland fire crews will continue to monitor, patrol, and secure the north and northwest area. Today the remaining six structural task forces will be bolstered by a complement of 20 engines that are assigned to the Lone Rock Fire. Structural crews will be working in the community of Lonerock, and along the 25 Road on the southern front of the fire.

Firefighters will work through the night to protect structures and suppress the fire, focusing additional resources on the more active southeastern area.

Evacuations:

  • Level-3 Evacuations – GO NOW! Level-3 Evacuate immediately for the following areas:
  • Gilliam County: residences South of Lonerock. An evacuation center is set up at memorial hall in Condon. For more information on evacuations, visit Gilliam County Sheriff's Office Facebook page

  • Morrow County: from the West County Line along Buttermilk Canyon to HWY 207, Mile Post 10 South of Hardman to the South Morrow County line. The Red Cross will be setting up a temporary shelter at the Heppner Elementary School. For more information on evacuations, visit Morrow County Sheriff's Office Facebook page
  • Level-2 Emergency Alert – GET SET! Level-2 Be set to evacuate at a moment’s notice for the following areas:
  • Gilliam County: residences North of Lonerock.
  • Wheeler County: community of Spray. A temporary evacuation center has been set up at the Wheeler County Fairgrounds (720 E 3rd Street in Fossil, OR). Showers and public restrooms are available on site. For more information about the evacuation point, call 2-1-1.

Weather: Hot, dry conditions are expected to persist. The southwest morning winds are expected to shift to northwest gusting winds this afternoon. This will contribute to very active fire behavior in the afternoon.

Smoke Information: Visit https://fire.airnow.gov/ for local air quality information.

Flight Restrictions: A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place above the Lone Rock Fire area. Unauthorized drone flights (UAS) pose serious risks to firefighter and public safety and the effectiveness of wildfire suppression operations. Aerial firefighting is suspended when unauthorized UAS are in the area, allowing wildfires to grow larger.
