Trout Fire: 23,597 acres | 70% contained
Long Fire: 9,204 acres | 98% contained
Total Personnel: 175

Trout Fire: Crews will continue to hold and mop-up along Sherman Pass Rd. Line improvements are underway in various areas to maintain and improve on containment. Transition to damage assessment and suppression repair continues with a group being established to focus on these efforts where needed across both fires. Excess hose and equipment is being inventoried and backhauled. Wildland fire modules are in the process of being extracted in steep country where there will be continued monitoring by air. The threat of short-range spotting will remain but may be mitigated with the gradual cooling and somewhat higher humidity as the days progress. Heavy surface and ground fuels will continue to generate heat, driving that possibility.

Long Fire: Fire activity remains minimal with containment at 98 percent. The Long fire is being monitored by air. Suppression repair work continues, particularly in the Kennedy Meadows area. Grading operations continue down Canebrake Rd to 178. Fire suppression equipment is in the process of being inventoried and removed.

Weather & Air Quality: A slow cooling trend continues as high pressure slowly breaks down through the weekend. Winds will follow typical patterns for the area, with a few cumulus buildups north of the fire area on Friday. Max temperatures of 70-80 degrees are expected today with a minimum relative humidity (RH) of 20-28%. West/southwest wind speeds of 7-13 mph with gusts of 20 mph are expected after 3pm. On ridges/exposed areas wind speeds of 8-15 mph with gusts of 21 mph are expected. Tonight, minimum temps across the fire will range from 53-60 degrees with RH recoveries between 38-65 percent.

Sequoia National Forest & BLM Closures & Restrictions: Sequoia National Forest lands, roads, trails, and recreation sites around the Trout and Long Fires are temporarily closed under Forest Order No. 0513-24-13.

Black Mountain Fire Update 5 pm 08 09 2024

Related Incident: Black Mountain
Publication Type: News

Northern Rockies Team 8 will transfer command of the Black Mountain Fire back to the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest on Saturday, August 10th at 6:00 AM. Robert Smith, a Type 3 Incident Commander will assume command of the fire with approximately 100 firefighters.

Current Status

Fire Operations reported 87% containment yesterday evening as firefighters successfully secured fireline over the past couple of days. Crews completed initial mop-up for most of the fire area, gridding approximately 120 feet into the black from the fireline, to search for and extinguish lingering heat. Firefighters are still working to secure the northwest corner of the fire which contains a high density of snag hazards (dead, standing trees) as well as a higher density of fuels on the ground. Feller bunchers and crews are reducing fuels along the Lincoln Ditch Road to create an additional holding line to protect private structures and land should the fire move further to the east and south.

Over the past couple of days, no additional heat sources were found to the east of the main fire perimeter. On Wednesday, UAS operations (Unmanned aircraft Systems Operations or use of a drone) along with infrared detection was used to search for heat 300 feet from the perimeter; no areas of heat were located.

Approximately 100 firefighters, including 3 crews, 2 engines, and a number of pieces of heavy equipment will remain on the incident.

Given the success of firefighter efforts to secure the fire perimeter, this will be the final update for the Black Mountain Fire. Please refer to Inciweb for the most up to date information regarding fire statistics. The Helena-Lewis and Clark Facebook page will share changes regarding Evacuations and Closures.

Weather

A light chance for showers and thunderstorms on Friday with probabilities increasing to a 40% chance for thunderstorms and 55% to 70% chance for rain. Temperatures are on a gradual warming trend.

Evacuations and Closures

Evacuations: Per the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office, an Evacuation Warning remains in effect. The following area is open to RESIDENTS ONLY: North of Lone Point Dr and Tamarack. North of North Lincoln Gulch/Morris Dr. North of the intersection of Beaver Creek Rd and Stonewall Creek and all feeder roads north of that intersection.

Easy Fire Update 08 09 2024

Related Incident: Easy Fire
Publication Type: News

Quick Facts

Size: 1754 acres | Start Date: July 17, 2024 | Location: 17 miles west of Mazama, WA | Containment: 0% Cause: Lightning | Resources Assigned: 185

CURRENT SITUATION: The fire remains on the northeast side of State Route 20, burning in timber on extremely steep slopes between Mebee Pass and Mount Hardy. Single tree torching may produce short-range spotting up to half-a-mile downwind. Crews have wrapped the Washington Pass SnoTel site and have installed sprinklers and hose line.

TODAY: A red flag warning is in effect for the Easy Fire and portions of western slopes of the Washington Cascades for Friday and Friday night for scattered lightning and gusty outflow winds. With expected wind gusts of 40 mph, firefighters may be forced to take a tactical pause during those events. Storms will start off dry but may bring wetting rains. Of primary concern to fire managers is the possibility of new starts and erratic winds that could rapidly escalate fire behavior. The fire will continue to finger uphill above Swamp Creek toward Mount Hardy with the potential for spotting over the ridgetop into the headwaters of the Methow River.

WEATHER AND SMOKE: Thunderstorms on Friday will start off dry with potential for new fire starts. Storms will slowly transition wet with the potential for heavier rain cores to produce upwards of a quarter of an inch. If these heavier rain cores fall over the Easy Fire, there is concern for small debris flows. The Easy fire will continue to experience light southeast winds on Friday then transition to northwest winds in the evening and through the day on Saturday with afternoon temperatures remaining in the 70s and 80s.

Expect good to moderate air quality across most of the communities in the Methow Valley and in the Lake Chelan area on Friday, with periods of smoke possible in the late afternoon and evening. Stehekin will likely experience moderate smoke throughout the day, while Omak and Brewster should have good air quality.

CLOSURES: State Route 20 is closed in both directions between Granite Creek (MP 148) and Easy Pass Trailhead (MP 157): https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/. State Route 20 will remain closed through the weekend as crews continue working to mitigate hazards. Washington Department of Transportation will reevaluate conditions on Monday August 12, 2024. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has closures in place for trails within the fire area: https://bit.ly/EasyFireClosures. This closure includes a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail. Campfires are prohibited. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in place over the fire: https://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_4_6779.html. Unauthorized drone activity is prohibited under the TFR.

EVACUATIONS: There are no evacuations in place for the Easy Fire. Visitors recreating in the area should be vigilant of surroundings and stay out of closed areas.

Bucktail Fire Update – August 9, 2024, 1:00 p.m.

Nucla, Colorado

Start Date: August 1, 2024

Cause: Unknown

Size: 7,177 acres

Percent Contained: 10%

Resources Assigned: 193 personnel

Crews (8); Engines (5); Water tenders (2); Air Resources (4); Heavy Equipment (7)

Yesterday: With the secured line in place, fire crews successfully conducted hand and aerial ignitions on the northwestern side of the fire. Helicopters continued interior burning into the evening which supported a low intensity fire to reduce understory vegetation.  This method of igniting fires and burnout operations controls the speed, intensity, and overall fire behavior.  The significant fire growth is due to these operations.

Today: Firefighters and helicopters will continue to scout for burnout opportunities and hand igntions will continue as possible.  Expect additional smoke again this afternoon from these operations. Firefighters will continue to strengthen firelines and increase containment.  Road and area closures will remain in place throughout the weekend.

Weather: Monsoon moisture increases today and will remain elevated through the coming week. Storms will be capable of strong and unpredictable outflow winds along with an increasing potential for excessive rainfall.  Today’s temperatures will range from 81-86F while relative humidity will be 30-35%.

Evacuations: None.

Closures:  Road and area closures are in place within the proximity of the fire for public and firefighter safety. This includes 25 Mesa Road to the northwest, as well as Houser Road, Cottonwood Trail, and Hwy 90 to the south. The closure area also includes all roads and trails within this boundary. For a complete list of closed roads and a map of the closure area, please visit: https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/coupd-bucktail-fire

The BLM temporary Emergency Closure Order and map are posted to the BLM Southwest District Fire page under Current Fire Restrictions & Notices / Uncompahgre Field Office at: https://www.blm.gov/programs/public-safety-and-fire/fire-and-aviation/regional-information/colorado/southwest-district

The Forest Service temporary Emergency Closure Order and map are posted on the Forest Service Website at: fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1198456.pdf

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over the fire area. Wildfires are a No Drone Zone. If You Fly, We Can’t: https://knowbeforeyoufly.org/home

Smoke Information: Visit CDPHE - Colorado.gov/AirQuality to learn about protecting yourself from wildfire smoke. For more information on current air quality go to Fire and Smoke Map (airnow.gov) and zoom in on Southwest Colorado.

Fire Prevention: Fire managers would like to remind everyone to be attentive to their actions and surroundings, especially in areas with dry vegetation or dead/down trees. Preventing new fires is the most important thing anyone can do to help firefighters. Practice smart wildfire prevention behavior including never leaving a campfire unattended, and ensuring fires are completely out and cold. Make sure trailer chains don’t drag and dispose of smoking materials properly.  Every spark can start a fire!
