Speirs Fire Update
August 6, 2024
Current Status - The Speirs Fire remains at 715 acres and 97 percent contained.
Updates - The temporary fire closure has been renewed for Greens Draw Road, Lowline Trail and Pipe Creek Trail through August 31. The closure will allow for the completion of continency line and provide for public safety during construction. Fire management officials emphasize the importance of this action. “The contingency line is an integral part of our protection efforts not only from the Speirs Fire, but against future fire starts,” said Flaming Gorge District Ranger Bryan Wilson. “We recognize the current, temporary impacts of the closure, but the benefits of the fuels break will last for many years.”
Wetting rain has been received over the fire area over the weekend, with anticipated chances of precipitation occurring over the next several days.
Fire activity remains minimal. However, as conditions dry, smoke may be visible as interior green pockets of fuel continue to burn within the fire’s perimeter.
As conditions on the fire remain somewhat static, updates on the Speirs Fire may no longer be daily. Periodic updates will be provided as the fire situation changes.
Closures - The following roads and trails remain closed to public access.
- Forest Service Roads (FSR) 610 and FSR049 (Greens Draw Road)
- Segments of National Forest System (NFS) Trails: Lowline Trail 103, beginning at its junction with the Pipe Creek Trail, NFS Trail 003, and continuing to the trailhead at Hwy 191; NFS Trail 003, beginning at its junction with NFS Trail 103 and continuing to its junction with NFS Trail 004; and NFS Trail 004, beginning at the junction with NFS Trail and continuing its intersection with Greens Draw Road 049.

Swawilla I Bridge Creek Fires Daily Update 08 06 2024
Related Incident: Swawilla Fire
Publication Type: News
Update for Swawilla I and Bridge Creek Fires
EVACUATION LEVELS: The town of Keller, the Highway 21 corridor, Mt. Tolman, Buffalo Lake and McGinnis Lake are now in Level 2 evacuation.
ROADS: All roads in evacuation level 2 areas are open, including Hwy 21, Peter Dan/Manilla and Cache Creek.
The Keller Ferry is open and fully operational.
Swawilla I Fire
A substantial amount of heat remains in and around the Meadow Creek and Jack Creek drainages following the burnout from several days ago. Crews are working to extinguish those hot spots. Firefighters will continue to identify and suppress smoking areas and residual pockets of heat on the northern portion of the fire, focusing on mopping up 100’ inside of containment lines. A structure protection group is patrolling the fire line near Keller. Crews will begin removing fire hose from the southeast portion of the fire so it can be refurbished and utilized on other fires in the region. Firefighters are available to assist local resources with initial attack if needed.
Bridge Creek Fire
The fire is 100 percent contained. Suppression repair should be complete this afternoon. Once complete, Bridge Creek Fire suppression repair resources will be reassigned to the Swawilla I Fire.
Fire Weather
Weather will remain hot and dry today with a slight chance of localized thunderstorms. Beginning tomorrow, temperatures should moderate some with highs expected to reach the low to mid 80s. Relative humidity should increase from the current trend of the mid-teens to low to mid 20s.
Safety Message
Due to the high temps and low relative humidity, unburned fuels in the interior of the fire will continue to ignite resulting in visible smoke throughout the fire area. The persistent smoke may be unhealthy for sensitive groups, especially in and around Keller. Visit airnow.gov for air quality in your area and take precautions for protecting your health.
Please slow down when driving all roads leading to and from the fires. Firefighting traffic and slow-moving equipment along roads and the potential for poor visibility due to lingering smoke could pose potential hazards to motorists.
No drones are allowed within our Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR). Remember, if you fly, we can’t!

Red Fire Quick Facts
- Size: 498 acres
- Start Date: July 17, 2024
- Origin: 5 miles west of Crescent Lake Junction, OR
- County: Klamath
- Cause: Lightning
- Total Staff: 284
- Containment: 0%
- Completed Fuel Break: 9.4 miles (includes 3.0 miles of Shaded Fuel Break)
Operations: Yesterday, the Red Fire continued to show limited growth. The shaded fuel break work between Crescent Lake and Odell Lake has progressed north from Crescent Lake Resort past Crescent Lake State Airport. Crews continue to work on structure protection assessments around Odell Lake Resort, Diamond Peak community, Willamette Ski Resort, and surrounding homes, preparing structure protection gear that can be deployed if needed. Crews continued to work on ladder fuel reduction between Forest Service Road 60 and the residential service road by removing grass, brush, small trees, and low-level limbs that can convey fire into tree canopies and have completed about 80 out of 100 acres. Road crews continued working on improving Forest Service Road 6010 to Summit Lake with a dozer, making it safer and more accessible for heavy equipment.
Today, firefighters will resume their efforts to protect homes, infrastructure, and natural resources. They will focus on structure assessments and protection planning. Hand crews and heavy equipment are working to extend the shaded fuel break west from Crescent Lake Resort along Forest Service Road 60. Resource advisors from the Deschutes National Forest are working closely with firefighters to protect sensitive areas and unique forest habitat. Crews will soon finish extending the northern section of the shaded fuel break between Crescent Lake and Odell Lake. The work on ladder fuel removal between Forest Service Road 60 and the service road is nearly complete, which will create defensible space for residences in the area. A helicopter may be available to the Red Fire today and as availability permits will focus on dropping water on the south side of the fire to cool down the active heat. Firefighters expect this to reduce fire intensity as the flames move into larger trees.
Round Mountain & Wickiup Fires: Please be aware fire operations will continue around these fires.
Round Mountain Fire is 108 acres and 85% contained. Firefighters continue to patrol, mop-up, and complete repair work.
The Wickiup Fire is 168 acres and 90% contained. Firefighters continue to patrol and mop-up.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office lifted the evacuation order around the Wickiup Fire. Temporary emergency closures remain in effect for areas around the Wickiup Fire and Round Mountain Fire.
Closures: The Deschutes National Forest has implemented an emergency closure around Crescent Lake and in the Diamond Peak Wilderness. The public should note that Forest Service Road 60 is closed, and road guards have been posted for public safety.
