Pioneer Fire Daily Update

August 3, 2024

Quick Facts

Size:  33,761 (No updated IR)

Start Date: June 8, 2024

Location: 31 miles NW of Chelan, WA

Containment: 12%

Personnel: 668

Cause: Human-caused, under investigation

Resources Assigned:  13 crews,  4 helicopters,  24 engines,  28 water tenders,  20 heavy equipment

Bear season opened August 1st. Hunters should keep themselves up to date with local forest closures by visiting the Forest Service Forest Closure Interactive Map.

CURRENT SITUATION:  California Incident Management Team 15, led by Incident Commander Tom Clemo assumed command of operations on the Pioneer Fire at 6:00 am this morning. Yesterday in Stehekin, the fire crossed into Purple Creek and is burning in the elevations above the boat landing. Sprinklers were activated and 27 miles of hose line through town is in operation wetting around homes and infrastructure. Crews are working to slow the progression of the fire with aviation support, but the hot and dry weather remains a troubling factor.

Crews also assisted in initial attack on the Flat Fire that ignited midday to the west of Stehekin. That fire is in steep and inaccessible terrain to boots-on-the-ground firefighters and was supported by helicopter bucket drops and scooper planes. Mop-up continued along the lakeshore from Fourmile down lake. Firefighters will hand check for hot spots on the ground around structures and extinguishing any heat that may be found. The mastication of biomass and line strengthening work to the south of the fire continues to be slow and steady work.

TODAY’S ACTIVITIES:  The fire to the west of Stehekin will be supported by helicopter bucket drops today. Firefighters will actively engage the fire above Stehekin by implementing tactical firing operations to reduce flammable fuels. The fire is following previous fire patterns seen in the area, running up drainages and stalling progression in the high country. Washington State Fire Mobilization and firefighter crews continue structure protection on the lakeshore. Masticators and bulldozers will work to widen the contingency lines along Nelson Ridge and improve road conditions on the south side of the fire.

WEATHER AND SMOKE:  An excessive heat advisory has been issued for Saturday and the Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for increasingly hot, dry, and unstable weather conditions through Sunday.  However, winds are not expected to be notable throughout the weekend. Smoke impacts from the Pioneer Fire will be most noticeable around Lake Chelan throughout the day, with some relief expected in the afternoon. See Current Smoke Outlook for North Central Washington (airfire.org) for information about smoke and air quality.

EVACUATIONS: Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuation levels remain in effect around the Pioneer Fire. Please contact Chelan County Emergency Management or visit https://t.ly/QoH9w for more information.

Operations: The Red Fire continued to show moderate fire behavior and had marginal growth despite the increased fire weather conditions yesterday. Crews have completed the structure protection assessments around Odell Lake Resort and surrounding homes and are preparing structure protection gear that can be deployed if needed. Firefighters continued expanding the shaded fuel break northward between Crescent Lake and Odell Lake and have completed 1.5 miles between the Crescent Lake resort and the Crescent Lake State Airport. Based on improved mapping data, the shaded fuel break is now estimated to be 75% complete. Crews have also completed 35 out of 100 acres of ladder fuel reduction between Forest Service Road 60 and the residential service road by removing grass, brush, small trees, and low-level limbs that can convey fire into tree canopies. Road crews continued to improve Forest Service Road 6010 with a dozer, making it safer and more accessible for heavy equipment. Over 550 structure assessments have been completed. Road improvement work expanded to Summit Lake to facilitate access for heavy equipment and safety for firefighters.

Today, firefighters will resume their efforts to protect homes, natural resources, and road and railroad infrastructure. Crews will continue extending the shaded fuel break between Crescent Lake and Odell Lake and removing ladder fuels between Forest Service Road 60 and the residential service road, which will help create defensible space for residences in the area.

Domingo, 4 de agosto de 2024
Los bomberos aseguran el punto caliente y persiguen las áreas calientes restante.

Acres: 20,013 acres

Fecha de inicio: 21 de Julio 2024

Causa: Rayo

Combustibles: Madera, hierba, arbustos.

Contención: 57%

Recursos: 327

MONUMENT, Ore.

Refugios

  • El centro de evacuación está establecido en Grant Union High School, 911 S Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.

2024 SQF Lightning Daily Incident Update 08 03 2024

Related Incident: 2024 SQF Lightning
Publication Type: News

Trout Fire: 23,559 acres - 49% contained

Long Fire: 9,204 acres - 95% contained

Total Personnel: 321

Borel Fire: For continuing information, please visit: https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/casqf-borel-fire

Trout Fire: Fire behavior moderated yesterday due to cloud cover, increased humidity, and some rainfall. Today’s warming, however, will quickly dry out fuels. Interior islands will continue to burn. Spotting to the north over Sherman Pass Road could further increase fire spread. Crews will continue to hold Sherman Pass Road and Bald Mountain Ridge. Cloudy and cooler conditions, combined with possible thunderstorms, will amplify the risk of fire spread. Warm temperatures and moderately gusty south/southeast winds will contribute to these dynamics. The chance of dry lightning and gusty outflow winds remains, increasing the possibility of fire movement primarily in areas with unsecured fire line.

Long Fire: Fire activity remains minimal with containment at 95 percent. A patrol status is being maintained to periodically reassess for any changes.

Weather & Air Quality: Hot and dry conditions are anticipated through the weekend. Sunny skies are anticipated today with temperatures between 89-99 degrees and 70-78 degrees at 7000 feet. Residual monsoon moisture will maintain a slight chance of showers with a 7% chance of wetting rain. Humidity levels are trending down to 25-40% during the day and 35-45% in the evening. Temperatures are expected to increase through the weekend with a decrease in relative humidity. A daily smoke outlook is produced for communities affected by wildfire smoke: tinyurl.com/452x2uzr.

Smoke Outlook: https://outlooks.airfire.org/outlook/d393fd74

Red Flag Warning Saturday Across the Homestead Complex

The Homestead Complex includes seven fires that total 2,362 acres and are currently 5% contained. There are 481 personnel currently working on the fire. Fire managers are directing resources to fires based on threats to property, infrastructure, industry, and areas with the highest probability of success.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for an area that includes the Homestead Complex. Thunderstorms will be moving through the area from the south, with the eastern half of the complex most likely to be affected. Incident resources are prepared to work with local agencies to respond to any new fires.

Outflow winds from passing thunderstorms could affect fire behavior. Wind gusts up to 50 mph may increase the rate of spread of fire on the landscape. Fires most likely to see increased activity with today’s weather system are Horse Heaven Creek (680 acres), Bullpup (174 acres), Fuller Lake (117 acres), and Reynolds Butte (278 acres)

Since the warming trend began, hotshot crews have been working with Douglas Forest Protective Association late into the night to respond to spot fires on No Man Fire (899 acres), including a 10-acre spot fire near North Chilcoot and Forest Road 3821. As of this morning, all spot fires have been contained. Resources are focused on protecting important values including private and forest timber, communications infrastructure, and wildlife habitat.

Personnel are using direct line to protect values at risk on the Salmon 33 Fire (187 acres) and are patrolling the east flank of the fire. Crews continue preparing and improving indirect lines with hose lay to minimize the footprint of the Reynolds Butte Fire.

Across the Homestead Complex firefighters continue to strengthen indirect lines along roads and existing trails. Strengthening these existing features is safer, more efficient, and more effective than constructing direct line in steep, rugged, remote terrain.

The Lost Bucket Fire (34 acres) was contained on July 29.

Current forest fire restrictions and danger ratings are: Fire Danger Rating: Very High. Industrial Fire Precaution Levels (IFPLs): 3. Public Use Fire Restrictions (PURs): 3.
